GILL ALEXANDER
FIGURINES #9: ANNIE Markers on Paper, 27 x 15"

DATE COMPLETED: APRIL 4, 2015
TOTAL HOURS WORKED: 20
Annie Borer (Wallace), my coworker at Atwater's Restaurant in the mid 1980's is the subject. Annie had been very helpful to me in arranging and completing the photo shoot for what would eventually become Figurines #2: Reception in the spring of 1987. Both she and Wilma Katz had posed for me. The photo I most liked had captured the two of them together; but for some reason I had decided that "Figurines" drawings could have only one person at a time. Annie wound up being cut. (After all, I had always maintained that "Figurines" was as much about the negative space and what wasn't shown as it was about what was shown) Still, I regretted that decision for years.
I found this particular image while digitizing old negatives and was pleased that I had stumbled upon a way to finally include Annie. Nevertheless, the photo was grainy and quite poor. I suppose I felt that this gave me some license to be a bit more loose in the face and hair. I still find my choices there very chaotic.
