The photo I worked from on Ducklings  lacked the kind of detail that I usually like to work with; nevertheless the composition seemed strong enough that it hardly mattered. As a result the final drawing wound up being bit more gestural in its overall style. Sometimes a single brush stroke was all that I could use for some essential seeming detail: an eye, a lip, the sole of a shoe or a piece of jewelery.
