GILL ALEXANDER
FIGURINES #2: RECEPTION Ink on Paper, 16 x 14"

DATE COMPLETED: JUNE 14, 1987
TOTAL HOURS WORKED: 63
Wilma, the receptionist for Atwater’s, the large corporate restaurant where I worked 1987, was the first person I ever encountered with a telephone headset. I was continually startled whenever she would break into an intense and highly focused phone conversation -seemingly from out of nowhere - while in the midst of interacting with me. Reception grew out of a photo shoot of Wilma seemingly being dragged back into her visual environment. I enlisted the help of Restaurant hostess Annie Borer (Wallace) whose job it was to invade Wilma’s space. In hindsight I sometimes wish I had included Annie in the final drawing; but, at the time, having a single “figurine” seemed more important.
The lace in Wilma’s clothes became one of my primary challenges. Another worry had been Wilma’s eyes. This was my first drawing of a full face - without glasses or an obscuring pose.
